Busy day. I spent an hour on the phone with Social Security regarding the girls' benefits due to prematurity. Of the hour, about half of it (approximately) was me listening to the SS worker type in data regarding us. So, I was able to also spend that time shopping for wedding presents for our friend's and my cousin's upcoming weddngs.
Dr. Breed called before I left the house. The girls are doing well, and he said their blood tests indicated their red blood cells are starting to kick in, which is good. Abby has a recurrence of diaper rash (it had gone away for a few days), so he ordered the stronger stuff to be used and asked for the nurses to be vigilant about her diapers. Hazel is still on 1.5 liters of oxygen, but he hopes she'll be off the cannula by the end of the week. Hazel also gets her follow up eye exam this week (Abby's is next week).
As usual, the doctor then asked if I had any questions. I'd been thinking about this for awhile, so I asked him, based on his experience and how they were projecting, when he'd estimate they could come home. His answer: THREE WEEKS! Talk about exciting and scary at the same time!!!! But, the coolest part is Matt's birthday is in about three weeks ... when I texted him to give the update, he said "that would be the best birthday ever."
Priscilla, our nurse today (who I like), told me it'd be best for the girls if we split up the bottle and breast feeding attempts to every other feeding/touch time. So I tried breast feeding again with both while I was there in the afternoon. Hazel took to it a bit better, although we had to latch her on several times. Abby was about the same as Monday - she didn't seem super interested at the beginning, and then it seemed spent most of the time licking and/or using it as a pacifier (Hazel did do that too). Matt went over there at 8:30 and got to bottle feed Hazel - she said she took to it really well.
I was able to hold both girls separately in a kangaroo care setup (skin to skin). Again, the girls' personality showed through. Hazel, on my chest, was squirming and crying a bit, although I think it helped once I put my hand directly on her back and covered her hand with mine (it seemed a bit cold). Abby, on the other hand, settled into my arm and took a nap with no fuss.
Finally - Hazel is 4"4 and Abby is 3"14. They are both almost over four pounds!
