It's hard to believe the girls were *10* months old on January 12th! In keeping with recent happenings, turns out we had a party to go to on the same day ... this time for our friends' son's second birthday. So after spending a laid-back Saturday afternoon at home, we loaded up the girls and headed over to Gymboree for the party.
Abimus with a bottle. |
Playing together. Or, more likely, each are trying to take the toy. |
Abby (l) and Hazel (r). They needed socks, and the only ones I found were Christmas themed. :) |
"Four little babies, sitting in a row...." Oh, and good luck getting all of them to look the same way at the same time! ;)
(L to R): Abby, Darcy, Ty, and Hazel. |
Poor Ty is outnumbered by girls. Or maybe he's a chick magnet? |
And...rapidly losing interest in pictures... |
Ty and Hazel contemplate the orangeness of the ball. |
Abby admires Darcy's tights and socks. |
The baby corner. Ty is only slightly less outnumbered now. |
Bubbles! Gymboree has these bubbles that don't immediately dissolve. Apparently they are $5Mill/oz (I may be slightly exaggerating), but they were definitely fun. The girls couldn't figure out what was going on!
At this point we were well past bedtime, and so the melting down was close to commencing... (fortunately, avoided). |
Matt and Abby bounding on the inner tubes before eating. |
So, things going on with the girls in the last month/six weeks (since I'm late):
We officially moved the girls into their cribs full time after Christmas. They had been napping up in their rooms during the day, but sleeping in the co-sleepers at night in our room. It was a move we probably could have made sooner, but out of an abundance of caution (good lawyer phrase - ha) we kept Hazel strapped in a nap nanny at night to help with her reflux (no worries - that thing wasn't going to flip over). Anyway, by the time we moved her, she hadn't had any issues for months, and since Matt and I were both off, we figured the week after Christmas was a good time sort out any transition issues. Abby, fortunately, didn't miss a beat. We put her down in the crib at night and she went out and barely moved. Hazel, though, has had a tougher time - it's almost like she has *too* much room...she "migrates" (Matt's term) around the crib before finally settling down. And, for the last few weeks, she wakes up sometime between 9 and 10:30 and cries (sometimes we need to soothe her, sometimes she works it out herself). The good news is Hazel rarely wakes up Abby...she just sleeps right through all of the drama.
Aside from poor Bear's mid-evening awakening, the girls sleep really well at night (yes, we feel very fortunate). And in the morning they usually sleep in until 8 or 8:30 (I know Matt has been enjoying that since he's been off)! It is so cute - usually Abby wakes up first, and after moving around a bit in the crib, she starts babbling ("bababababamamamamamabbbbaaaaabbbb......baaaababababab....."). Most of the time Hazel is so zonked she sleeps through Abby's morning talk, and there have been a few times when we've gone in the room and it still didn't wake up the Bear!
Both girls are really moving around now, although not yet crawling (the OT, who worked quite a bit with Abby in December, has been really pleased with her and Hazel's progress). It'll probably happen pretty soon...perhaps we should take bets on which twin crawls first? ;) Now that Abby is more fluid and uses more muscles, it is getting much more difficult to change her diaper - we put her on the changing table and she immediately tries to flip/flop over. The best plan usually is to distract her something (she likes grabbing the wet wipes package, so that works). Hazel still *loves* to move around, and if she is one spot too long she gets really frustrated. But it is so cute to see her face light up in a smile when you start bouncing her, "throwing" her in the air, or making her "fly."
The girls are now eating "solid" food twice a day now. For awhile we having a tough time getting Hazel to finish her milk after eating the other food, but Matt's suggestion of switching the order (milk then solids) seems to have done the trick. So far the girls have eaten everything we've given them and seem to be big fans of real food (aside from peas). No signs of teeth yet for either Hazel or Abby, so we've got a bit before giving them something more solid. We feed them four times a day, and while our earlier schedule has been modified a bit - mainly due to the fact the girls get up later - they still have their last bottle around 6:45p and usually in bed by 7 or 7:15 pm.
I've heard several people say this age is the best age for babies: they smile and interact, you are over the newborn waking-up-every-two/three-hours stage, and they can't yet move or get into things. Obviously I'm no expert, but I think I understand why people say this. Right now, Hazel and Abby are bright, happy, fun babies. It is so enjoyable to spend time with them now (although I have to admit, I can't wait until they are older to do other stuff with them too).
As far as weight, Matt figured out the other day that Hazel is roughly 18.5 pounds and Abby is about a pound smaller than that (although everyone thinks by looking that Abby is bigger - probably because she seems to have a bigger head). They are fitting into 9 month clothes! I was at Carter's the other day and saw some preemie clothing (which, btw, seemed very scarce when I was looking for it last spring)...it is *amazing* to me the girls ever fit in those! I'll have to take a picture of the girls next to their preemie outfits when we get close to their birthday.
That should about cover the big things in the last month. I wonder what February will bring!
